coldrain have released their latest single, “POISON feat. Bert McCracken (The Used),” bringing together two distinctive voices from the Japanese and American heavy music scenes.
Released on August 28, “POISON” is taken from coldrain’s upcoming eighth album, “OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE,” due out on September 25, 2026.
This time, however, Masato is not alone behind the mic.
Joining him is Bert McCracken, frontman of The Used-one of the defining names of the American emo and post-hardcore scene since the 2000s, and, according to Masato, one of the vocalists the band have admired for many years.
When Something You Love Becomes “POISON”
At its heart, “POISON” is a song about love, desire, and the danger of losing yourself in something you cannot stop wanting.
Sometimes, something-or someone-we love can become so addictive that we keep craving more, even as we begin to realize that parts of ourselves are disappearing in the process.
We still want that feeling.
But somehow, we also have to find the right “dose” before it consumes us completely.
For Masato, that contradiction is one of the most deeply human emotions there is.
Musically, that tension takes shape through the contrast between the two vocalists. Masato’s powerful delivery meets Bert McCracken’s raw, emotionally urgent voice, bringing a distinct shade of emo into the heaviness of coldrain.
It is a collaboration that works not simply because two recognizable voices share the same track, but because both bring a different emotional weight to the conflict at the center of “POISON.”
What Comes After We “Optimize” Ourselves?
“POISON” will appear on coldrain’s eighth album, “OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE,” a 12-track record structured around two sides of a larger story.
The first half, “OPTIMIZE,” includes five tracks originally released on the band’s 2025 OPTIMIZE EP.
“POISON,” meanwhile, belongs to the “OPTDEMISE” side.
That placement gives its story of love, desire and the struggle not to lose yourself another layer of meaning within an album exploring what may lie beyond “optimization”-both evolution and demise.
Perhaps becoming better, stronger or more complete is not always as simple as it sounds.
Sometimes, the things we desire most can push us forward.
And sometimes, if we take too much, they become poison.
“OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE” Arrives September 25
coldrain’s “OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE” will be released on September 25, 2026.
Limited editions featuring Blu-ray or DVD content will also include live footage from BLARE FEST. 2026.
To celebrate the album’s release, coldrain have also announced a signing event at Tower Records Shibuya.
